Buddhism is considered to be the root of Thai culture which defines "Thainess". Buddhism embodies in manner, custom, architecture and is found in all aspects of Thai culture. It is for this reason that you will find great Buddha monuments and temples almost everywhere in Thailand, with people constantly coming to pay homage to the statues built in the effigy of Buddha.
One of the most popular monuments, which many tourists (local and foreign) do not miss to visit in Phuket is the Buddha Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri, nicknamed "Big Buddha". Located in front of the Nak Koet Buddhist Park, this Buddha image, in the attitude of subduing Mara, is a stunning piece of contemporary art which measures in at 25.45 meters wide and 45 meters in height. The image is made from reinforced concrete and covered in white and jade ‘Suriyakanta’ marble, imported from neighboring Myanmar and weighing in at a massive 135 tonnes. The image was named by three venerable and highly revered monks: Somdet Prayansangwon, Somdet Prasankarach and Sakolmahasangparinayayok in 2007 and designated as a dharma site which also affords great views over Chalong Bay from the front face of the image and of Kata, Karon and other smaller bays to the rear.
Phuket Big Buddha is one of the main and most revered landmarks on the island
Buddha was born the son of a king but decided to give up his luxurious life and became a perfectly enlightened being who attained the highest knowledge of the truth.
The teaching of Buddhism is to avoid all evil, to do only good to purify one's mind. Buddhists combine morality to bring harmony and happiness into their lives.
It was by following this teaching that devotees offered a land at the top of Mount Nagakerd with a magnificent view overlooking Phuket and allowing the creation of a temple around it.
It is the perfect place of communication to spread the Dharma of Buddha in the mind and in society.
Big Buddha opens from 6 am to 7 pm every day. No entry fee is required. The landmark is located on the Nakkerd Hills, between Kata and Chalong, with the road leading up to the Big Buddha is off Chao Fa Road East.
